What is Wettex?

If dishcloths could speak, they would tell fantastic stories. Take a look below to learn the story behind the Wettex dishcloth.

The history behind the beloved sponge cloth

After growing tired of traditional linen towels, in 1949 the Swedish engineer Curt Lindquist sought out to create a dishcloth that dries quickly like a towel, but is very absorbent like a sponge. Thus the Wettex dishcloth was born. His wife Margareta named the sponge cloth ”Wettex”, which is an abbreviation of the words “wet” and “textile”. This type of dish cloth has been used in virtually every Swedish household for more than 70 years and we are now bringing this to all American households.

How are Wettex dishcloths made?

Wettex dishcloths are made using a very specific production process. The first sponge cloth was created in the 1950s after Curt Lindquist put a sponge in a meat grinder, flattened it out, and mixed it with cotton. While seemingly simple, there are only two factories in the world that can produce the dishcloths using this specific and proprietary process; the original one in Sweden, the other in Germany.

What makes Wettex dishcloths so great?

What makes Wettex dishcloths so beloved is the fact that they combine the advantages of sponges and paper towels into one affordable, multipurpose product.

  • Wettex dishcloths have the absorbency of a sponge, but dry quickly like a paper towel.
  • Wettex dishcloths are biodegradable like a paper towel, but can be washed and reused like a sponge.
  • Wettex dishcloths dry quicker than traditional sponges, preventing bad smells and bacteria growth.

How can Wettex dishcloths be used?

  • Wettex dishcloths can be used throughout the kitchen as a sponge and paper towel alternative.
  • Wettex dishcloths are streak free and are great for cleaning glass and windows.
  • Wettex dishcloths are great for cleaning surfaces that would otherwise show the fibers of traditional paper towels.
  • Wettex dishcloths can be used to germinate seeds. They’re also a great way to prevent soil from leaving your potted plants!
  • Wettex dishcloths can basically be used wherever you would normally use towels or sponges!
